Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House, Inc

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) does not provide or fund lodging for families of veterans receiving care/treatment at Truman VA Hospital in Columbia. As a result, this can create a hardship on veterans and their families when they must pay for lodging or sleep in uncomfortable chairs or sofas located in the patient's room or nearby lounge.

For more than 30 years, the Fisher House Foundation has endeavored to provide a free "home away from home" for military and veteran families while their loved ones are receiving health care services. This mission is accomplished by building and furnishing Fisher Houses that are then gifted to the respective federal facility.

The mission of the Friends of Mid-Missouri Fisher House, an independent non-profit organization, is to support the local Fisher House by providing "just in time" incidentals such as groceries and personal items for guests, emergency needs and enhancing awareness of the Fisher House program. The Mid-Missouri Fisher House opened in July 2023 and is located on the campus of Truman VA. The facility, located just steps away from the main entrance, includes 16 suites, a spacious kitchen, dining area and laundry facilities.

The Mid-Missouri Fisher House serves veterans and their families from Truman VA's service area, which includes 43 Missouri counties and Pike County, Illinois. Truman VA is a referral center for heart care services and treats veterans from throughout Missouri and neighboring states.
